Robin Roberts enjoyed a rare public outing with her long-term partner Amber Laign on Monday as they lent their support to an important cause close to their hearts.
The couple, who have been together since 2005, hit the red carpet at New York’s Gotham Hall for the 11th Annual GLSEN Respect Awards, which recognise the efforts made to ensure schools are safe for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies.
The popular Good Morning America co-anchor came out publicly as gay last December and credits her girlfriend of the best part of a decade – a massage therapist – for giving her the strength to fight and win her battle with cancer.
All for a good cause: Robin Roberts and long-term girlfriend Amber Laign made a rare public appearance together on Monday night, lending their support to the GLSEN Respect Awards, which recognise the efforts made to ensure schools are safe for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students
While the couple prefer to keep their private life just that, they couldn’t be kept away from the worthwhile event, during which they met with courageous LGBT students and their equally inspiring nearest and dearest supporters.
‘Honored to be with courageous students,’ she wrote in response to a photo she was tagged in on Twitter in which the couple are flanked by almost a dozen thrilled fans.
The 53-year-old was looking stylish as she hit the red carpet in fitted black overalls paired with
a white long-sleeved shirt and black T-bar peep-toe stilettos with white bow detail on the toes.
She carried a matching white clutch and accessorised with a silver necklace with dark stone pendant, pearl drop earrings and, of course, her colourful GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) bracelet.
Complementary couple: The pair, who have been together since 2005, looked chic in their outfits, with the GMA co-anchor opting for black overalls, a white shirt and T-bar stilettos while her partner chose a patterned maxi-skirt, black V-neck sleeveless blouse, thick black buckled belt and sandals
Welcoming committee: The usually very private couple were given a warm welcome by GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) executive director Dr Eliza Byard before meeting with dozens of courageous LGBT students and their support networks
Her cropped brunette locks were nicely styled with curls on top, while her make-up featured complementary bronze hues, with nude-coloured lips and lashings of mascara on her top lashes.
Her 39-year-old love looked summery and chic in a pleated maxi-skirt featuring an unusual pattern
in two tones of blue and white, along with sheer black panel at mid-calf height.
She paired it with a black V-neck sleeveless blouse, a thick black leather buckled belt and simple black sandals, with a black and silver studded clutch to match.
Her long blonde tresses were worn in soft cascading curls, while she was only very minimally made up in fresh, natural hues of soft pinks.
Opposites attract: Glee star Dot-Marie Jones (right) and Bridgett Casteen displayed their different styles, with the actress donning black dress pants and shoes and shimmery beige shirt while her wife wore a black, white and grey wrap dress, sheer black stockings and matching heels
An Inspiration to all: Trans woman Janet Mock looked fabulous in her stylish red jumpsuit with semi-sheer sleeves as she was presented with the Inspiration Award for her tireless transgender rights activism
She also donned her GLSEN bracelet as well as another silver bracelet on the other wrist and dangly earrings.
Also showing their support for their community was Glee star Dot-Marie Jones and wife Bridgett Casteen, who have been married since December 21.
The pair showed off their contrasting styles, with the 50-year-old actress opting for black dress pants and shoes and a shimmery beige shirt, while her wife chose a black, white and grey patterned wrap dress with three-quarter sleeves, sheer black stockings and black heels.
Former 30 Rock star Maulik Pancholy – who came out publicly in November during an interview with Out magazine in which he discussed partner of nine years Ryan Corvaia, whom he became engaged to in January – was without his fiancé at the event.
A standout! America’s Next Top Model runway coach Miss J Alexander was a sight to behold in funky gold trousers, black velvet loafers, a white shirt and midnight blue velvet blazer, with a head full of gold pins holding her locks in place
A strong turnout: Country singer Chely Wright (left) and wife Lauren Blitzer-Wright (right), whose twin sons celebrated their first birthday the previous day, were only too happy to pose for photos alongside hostest with the mostest Dr Eliza Byard
Though he wasn’t short of attention, proving to be a hit as he took to the podium to deliver a stirring speech during the night’s festivities.
Other attendees included America’s Next Top Model runway coach Miss J Alexander – who will return for the upcoming cycle 21 after being previously let go from the show due to falling ratings – and trans woman Janet Mock.
The transgender rights activist and author was the recipient of the Inspiration Award for her tireless work in the LGBT community.
Love connection! Lauren joked on Twitter later that wife Chely ‘fell in love’ with former 30 Rock star Maulik Pancholy, to which the singer responded, ‘Lol! I did!’ – not that it was hard to see why, with the actor looking dapper in his dark grey suit as he took to the podium to speak during the festivities
One-of-a-kind! Paper Magazine editorial director Mickey Boardman was impossible to miss in his sequinned and leopard-print get.
